Importance of Bringing More Light Into The Home

Article written by Herb Lagois

I’m realizing how wonderful and how important indoor-outdoor integration is. I’m thinking about how many homes in Ottawa could benefit from this simple pleasure.

Our home, like most traditional homes, did not take advantage of the outdoors when it was built, and yours may not have either.

There’s an important visual aspect to our world outdoors. When we’re seated, how often do we strain to look over window sills? How often do look outside and see a wall? And there’s a practical aspect. Is getting to the rear yard a challenge? Do we need to navigate around furniture and through spaces? There’s the way a house feels too. Even when it’s sunny outside, does the house feel dark? Ours did!

Our solution was to create a space with floor-to-ceiling windows, vaulted ceilings and reflective flooring – literally, a sunroom.

front deck addition

What a difference it made! It’s more than a sun room. It’s also our family room because it’s the space our family gravitates to. The interior of the home is much brighter than before. Even the night time views are spectacular.

Naturally, adding spaces needs to be justified. If there is no need to add more space, there is no point in adding more. But, through design, there is always great “space” potential within existing spaces to opening up “compartments”, providing efficient outdoor access – by simply introducing natural light.

If you are considering renovating or adding space, there are many factors to consider – for instance, heat loss, heat gain, mechanical systems capacity, aesthetics, spatial planning, bylaws, and costs. An experienced design professional or firm has the ability to take the entire home into consideration – to take a holistic design approach.

Our sunroom/family room addition is one of the best decisions we have made. The outdoors is integrated into our home, and therefore into our daily lives. Even on cloudy days our home is bright – especially the existing space. Our home is a happy home. Best of all, our sunroom is a great place to kick back, do nothing and enjoy the beauty of the day.

Ottawa Citizen: Two Ottawa-area renovation projects are finalists for national awards

Article snippets from Ottawa Citizen

“Two Manotick renovation projects have caught the attention of a prestigious national awards program, making the cut as finalists in the Canadian Home Builders’ Association Sales and Marketing Awards.

A massive renovation and addition to a waterfront property by Lagois Drafting & Construction that transformed it from a tired bungalow to an updated one-and-a-half-storey was named Monday among five finalists in the category of whole house renovation between $250,000 and $500,000.

“Awesome,” Lagois president Herb Lagois said in an email on hearing the news. “What an honour to be amongst the best in Canada.”

The design, which takes advantage of ample river views without compromising the delicate balance of the shoreline, sought to create more efficient, open living spaces, taking into consideration the desire to maximize natural light and cross breezes (there’s no air conditioning) and the need to plan ahead to allow the owners to age in place.

The annual awards put on by the association, or CHBA, celebrate excellence in new homes, home renovation, innovative technology and construction, outstanding presentation and marketing among the more than 8,500 member firms across the country.

Winners in 23 categories will be announced at the association’s national conference in March.”

Award-Winning Ottawa Architectural Design & Construction Firm

What started out as a one-man-business framing houses, 25 years later, is a 10-employee, award-winning architectural design and construction firm.

A young and idealistic Herb Lagois established Lagois Drafting and Construction in 1984. Today, the thriving business provides design-build services for custom homes, home renovations and home additions, serving the greater Ottawa area, and surrounding counties.

“We’re up front with the clients. We spell everything out from A to Z,” said Lagois. “Everybody knows what to expect before we start construction including budgets.”

Lagois received the first CHMC Renovation for the Environmental Hyper Sensitive Award in Canada, in 2003. “It was a fun project,” he said.

Construction Company Valued for Community Support

The entire firm holds dear to their hearts their contributions to the Ottawa Ronald McDonald House. A new play addition was completed in 2008 and there have been numerous fund raisers over the years.

“It’s hard to put into just a few words what Lagois Drafting & Construction has meant and means to all of us at Ronald McDonald House,” said Ronald McDonald House executive director Carol Houston. “What started out over 11 years ago as a one-year commitment to a fundraising project in support of our House, turned into a ten year commitment. What started out as a business arrangement quickly turned into a longstanding friendship with Herb, Chris and the entire Lagois team.

“Their ongoing commitment, support and generosity shown to our House and our families is quite overwhelming,” Houston said. “They have helped us out on a number of small projects around the house and recently were instrumental in helping us build a much needed playroom for the children staying at the House, donating their time and service as well as garnering support from their suppliers for the project. It was not an easy job and at no time was anything too much trouble.

“At all times, the care and attention given to the job of not disrupting the families staying at the House was foremost on the minds of the construction team. All of us at Ronald McDonald House are so appreciative of the friendship that has developed and we wish Herb and the Lagois team continued success in all that they do. Their workmanship and work ethic is top of its class led by the quiet and thoughtful Herb. They are quite a team. Happy 25th and many, many more!”

Construction Company Awarded for Safety Standards

In 2009, Lagois employee Chris Parish received the GOHBA’s Safety Award for Builders. Ottawa South – This Week also recognized Lagois as the Platinum Reader’s Choice selection for Favourite Local Contractor.

“We’re constantly striving to improve and so our team is always taking courses,” explains Lagois. “I reinforce onsite experience as well so our designers know what a 2×4 is as opposed to a 2×4 on paper.”

Green Building Construction Techniques

Services offered include architectural design, construction with emphasis on green building techniques such as (hydronic) radiant heat (liquid-in floor heating), geothermal heat pump installation and solar.

“I’m focused on things that work holistically,” says Lagois. “In design you can do some real funky stuff but it has to be affordable and realistic for the client.”

Future Growth of Lagois Construction

After 25 years in the business Lagois plans on expanding the company at a modest pace in order to keep the standard of quality at the high level clients’ expect.

Stretching Your Renovation Dollar

The best way to achieve a successful renovation project is through problem solving. Whether making a front porch more inviting, a kitchen more functional or carving out a better flow in a floor plan, entrants in the three renovation/addition categories, which were defined by price, say knowing how to get maximum results with a limited budget is key.

Getting The Best Renovation Value

Herb Lagois says that when it comes to giving clients the best value as well as what they’re looking for, he offers two options and does a cost comparison. The process, he says, has to be interactive with the client because when it comes to budgets, it’s always a challenge.

“It’s one thing to create the infrastructure or the structure,” he says. “And then it’s another thing to deal with finish, selection, and then the materials. I always relate it to buying a car. Once you start looking at all the options, it’s amazing what’s out there.”

Finding Hidden Renovation Costs Before They Happen

He holds what he calls a “trade day” where all relevant trades for a project are brought in to assess issues that might come into play and squeeze the budget. It’s meant to avoid cost overruns. “So if the plumber discovers something, then we can address it up front,” says Lagois. “So hopefully as best as possible, we can deal with a lot of unknowns.”
