GEOTHERMAL - Horizontal (closed loop)

Horizontal LoopHorizontal Loop:
Systems are the same as vertical systems except the piping is installed horizontally approximately 5 to 7 feet below grade ( 1.5 to 2.1 m). Due to seasonal temperature fluctuations, more piping is typically needed than a vertical system. The actual pipe layout will vary depending on site conditions and heat/cooling requirements. With proper design, performance of a horizontal system will be the same as a vertical system and vice versa: ultimately the system that is best for you is the one that provides the best performance at the lowest up front cost.

Cost:
Horizontal systems may be less expensive to install (trenching vs. boreholes) however they do require large surface areas with soils that can be trenched (bedrock would not be feasible).
