PROJECT 5
The addition is situated in a loft over an existing garage. Radiant heat was chosen as an economical solution as well as a practical solution (eliminating the use of ducts and heated plenums).
The radiant heat tubes were laid on top of the insulated floor system, then 1 ½" of light weight concrete (Gyp-crete) was poured over the entire surface. Ceramic tile completes the floor. The light-weight concrete combined with ceramic tile creates a great thermal mass, distributing the heat over the entire floor surface. A small domestic hot water tank was used as the heat source.
A ductless air conditioner was used for the air conditioning. The loft addition is totally isolated (mechanically) which means systems can be off or turned down when not in use.
