Apples, pumpkins, and all sorts of Octoberish things

If you feel like taking a lovely autumn road trip out of the city around Thanksgiving, you might visit some of the area’s orchards, pick your own apples, let the kids run free, and just breathe in the crisp fall air. Our team has some ideas about ways to celebrate this beautiful month. Here they are.
Cannamore Orchard at Crysler, Ont.
10 am to 5 pm until Oct. 12

Admission: $16 (Children under three, free)
Free parking
This is a family farm with children in mind. Pick apples, but have fun in other ways, too ‒ for example:
Riding on a covered wagon
Taking a trip on the cow-train
Using pedal cars
Visiting giant hedge mazes
Saying hello to the roaming chickens
Playing in the family activity area
Walking through the orchard
Skipping the apples and picking pumpkins (or both!)

This farm has a large variety of organic apples. It’s inspired by old time farms of the past with cows, sheep, goats, pony, donkey, ducks and laying hens.
These are the apples you can choose and the dates when they can be picked:
Nova Mac: Red apples, Nova Scotia MacIntosh. Up to Oct. 10.
Liberty: Red apples with the sweet MacIntosh taste. Good storage length. Up to Oct. 10.
Purple Passion: Red flesh apple for making juice or cooking; not for eating fresh. Up to Oct. 20.
Freedom: Red and juicy; taste like heritage apples. Up to Oct. 23.
Nova Easy Grow: Firm apples similar to Cortland. Sweet taste; low acidity. Up to Oct. 23.
