Jeff Hurdis, Lead Designer at Lagois Design Build Renovate, had some important information to share recently.
He was speaking at a Canadian Home Builders’ Association event called “Towards Net Zero Reno Roadmap Bootcamp”.

First qualified in Canada
Jeff was invited to make a presentation because Lagois is CHBA’s first Qualified Net Zero Renovator to successfully complete a project through CHBA’s “Towards Net Zero Renovation Initiative.”
This first qualified net zero renovation by Lagois was an Ottawa home that is designed to generate as much energy as it consumes, with greatly reduced utility costs and the absolute maximum in year-round comfort.
The renovation is one more step in shaping the future of sustainable living.

Challenge and process
Jeff told the audience of about 135 that the home was upgraded with high-performance insulation, windows, and mechanical systems. He also discussed the challenge of creating an airtight build within an existing structure. He explained:
the open design of the home still maintains privacy
design and construction teams collaborated in an integrated environment
an energy advisor and mechanical designer participated from the outset
homeowners were involved in the process.
He left his listeners with some basic advice:
Commit to the end goal early.
Don’t sacrifice higher quality materials because of costs; they will only cost more in the end.
Sub-trades must be trained early and fully involved in the process.
Thank you, Tom

Jeff praised Tom Felts, Lagois Site Supervisor, for his role in the success of the renovation.
“Tom kept the job on time and on budget,” he said. “He was instrumental in achieving the final goal of net zero ready renovation.”
