President & Visionary, Lagois Design·Build·Renovate

There are many things a good renovation company can promise: beautiful design, quality craftsmanship, great service, attention to detail.

They all matter, of course. But after more than 40 years of Lagois designing, renovating and building homes, I believe there is something more fundamental than all of them: trust.

Trust is what allows you to invite us into one of the most personal parts of your life: your home. It allows us to have honest conversations with you about your priorities and investment. It invites us to challenge an idea you might have when experience tells us there may be a better solution.

And ultimately, trust is what transforms a renovation from a transaction into a partnership.

At Lagois, we've spent more than four decades earning that trust. To me, that's true authenticity.

When Herb Lagois founded Lagois in 1984, he established more than a company. He established a way of working: a commitment to respect you as homeowner; to respect our craft; to think before we build; to do what we say we're going to do; and to stand behind our work.

I inherited those principles. My responsibility is to protect them while continually asking how we can make Lagois better – for example, how can we listen more carefully? Communicate more clearly? Identify risks earlier? Align design possibilities better with investment? Create homes that remain relevant as families change?

And how can we build relationships with our clients that are as enduring as the architectural solutions we create?

Your experience matters

A beautiful home is important, but equally important is your experience in its transformation.

What we hear from homeowners is that they felt listened to before design solutions are discussed. They understood their choices before they're asked to make them. They participated in collaborative conversations about investment while decisions can still be shaped. They appreciated questions being asked of them, assumptions challenged and potential issues investigated early.

And perhaps most importantly, they felt confident that someone was looking at the whole picture.

The experience of creating a home should reflect the same quality as the home itself. For us, that's what a thoughtful design-build process should ultimately provide: clarity in decisions, confidence in the path forward, and trust in the people guiding it.

Trusted advisors, not order-takers

Trust also means being willing to have difficult conversations. Sometimes our advice is: “Yes. This is absolutely worth doing.”

Sometimes we say: “Here's another way to think about it.”

And occasionally we’re blunt: “If this were my home, I wouldn't spend my money there.”

You don't need us simply to agree with you. You deserve the benefit of our experience. Our responsibility is to listen, guide, challenge when necessary, and advocate for the best overall outcome. That’s what being a trusted advisor means.

Quality before quantity

Success isn't measured simply by how many projects we complete. I'd rather Lagois take on the right projects and serve you exceptionally well than pursue volume at the expense of our standards, our people, or your experience.

That means we protect our team's capacity, giving design the time it deserves, planning construction properly, protecting your outcome and vision, and making sure your project receives the attention it needs. It means doing less, but better.

Designed to belong, designed to endure

We're not designing homes for the photograph taken on completion day. Of course, we want our work to be beautiful. But a home isn't a photograph. It's the setting for your life. It contains your artwork, your furniture, your memories, and the things you collect over a lifetime that make a home unmistakably yours.

That's why we don't design around trends or for broad appeal. We begin with you. We study how you gather, what you value, and how your life might change over the years. A Lagois home should not feel like it could belong to anyone. It should belong unmistakably to you.

We think beyond today: Can your spaces adapt to you and your life as it evolves? Will the materials endure? Will the architecture remain relevant over the years? Can it become richer as you fill it with memories?

We often say: “designed for every tomorrow”, and that’s what it means to us. Better living is a pursuit that began more than 40 years ago. My responsibility is to honour that foundation while continually raising the standard for what comes next.

It’s about trust, relationships and architecture that endure … in pursuit of Perfecting the Art of Living®.
